What did the 'here is' button on old tty keyboards do?

I was looking at images of vintage IT equipment and noticed a button on the keyboards of some console labeled 'here is'. What did it do?

I gave up looking for the answer. Only thing I can suggest is a mailing list or discussion group where most of the audience are deaf.
